Our approach is based on achieving pragmatic results that deliver real improvements in business performance. This may mean off-site development work or providing support within the organisation's environment, for example;


  • Intensive behavioural development programmes (e.g. 20 days' offsite development per manager in modules over a period of 16 months, plus work-related assignments between modules in that time period).
  • Team development programmes that develop skills and behaviours whilst successfully addressing business problems.
  • Building cross-cultural teams - helping organisations work across national and organisational boundaries.
  • Assessing organisational capability eg, to work collaboratively with other organisations and deliver strategy.
  • Developing coaching relationships within client businesses to ensure that the organisation has the ability to maintain the development initiative outside its relationship with Soma.
  • Where appropriate, using the outdoors to provide a turbulent environment designed to strengthen team relationships and test management capabilities in times of change:
    Sea kayaking in the Bahamas
    Hiking in the Lake District
    Problem-solving exercises
  • Research to build continuously our own capability for the benefit of our clients, for example our work for the National Audit Office  Joint NAO SOMA report: Managing Collaborative Relationships
  • Telephone coaching and other support.

Our methodologies to achieve success vary, however our underlying philosophy remains constant regardless of the specific approach chosen to meet the needs of the client. This philosophy is based on our core values of Participation, Trust and Common Vision . These values underpin all our relationships, whether they are with colleagues, clients or suppliers.

Participation

We work with our clients, not on or for them. We have a non-prescriptive but action-orientated style. It is important that objectives and goals receive mutual commitment.

However, we are not averse to giving advice when it is required.

Trust

We start from the position that we trust and are trusted. This means that we can have meaningful involvement very early in a client relationship. We then work extremely hard at maintaining trust in the longer term.

Honesty and integrity are clearly central to this value.

Common Vision

By definition, common vision is co-created and shared at all levels of the organisation.
